John Walker - Dark - Intense & Descriptive!

Writer's Wednesday
Welcome John Walker!

I am pleased to have with us today an author that writes some very deep, dark, intense books.  His writing is intense, descriptive and pulls you into a very detailed story.  I have had had the pleasure of reading three of his books from his series "Dark Retribution Quartet" and found myself sucked into a very intense world of death and destruction - but there is an underlying story within in each book of good battling evil.  I sure hope you check out his books - Now... Here's our interview with John!

Tell us a bit about yourself

Do you work another job when you are not writing?

When I’m not writing I’m making a living haunting used book stores. Many years ago, I studied up on finding rare books and I trade them along with used DVDs, CDs and computer games. I can get lost in those stores for hours. It’s fun to rummage through boxes and find old editions I used to have as a kid. When people ask why I like to do both, I say that book trading makes me feel like Johnny Depp in The Ninth Gate and when I write I feel like Jack Nicholson in The Shining.

I recently passed a dog training/handling course and I’m looking forward to moving to premises large enough to have kennels so I can breed and train dogs. I have always loved dogs and working with them will not feel like work.

What is your favorite thing to do when you aren’t writing?

Being a dedicated writer it follows that I also love to read. There’s nothing better than putting your feet up and settling for a while to read a book. It de-stresses the body while at the same stimulating the mind and imagination. It’s sad that there are many people in the world who don’t know the simple pleasure and high value that reading offers.

I also love to listen to music. My collection is diverse and ranges from Meat Loaf, Alanis Morissette, Johnny Cash to classical. I especially love gothic rock, like Evanescence and We Are The Fallen.

At the end of a long day’s work, I like to unwind with a good movie.

What is your favorite color? Why?

Black. It’s the color of night, as dark as the tone of my stories and it’s my entire wardrobe. I don’t have to worry about what shade of it to wear.

What is your favorite season? Why?

Winter. I don’t do well in the heat. It makes me lethargic, but the light is better than the winter months, which boosts my productivity, as the dark days of winter can have the same effect on me as too much heat. To compensate in the dark winter months, I close the blinds and light up the room with lamps. They give the room a warm glow that I can relax and focus better in. I also choose winter because I love the snow. It’s picturesque and I never grew out of throwing a snowball into the back of someone else’s head. It’s never stopped being hilariously funny to me.

If you could live anyplace on earth, where would it be? Why?

That’s a good question because there are so many places, particularly in America and Canada, which I still want to visit. Ask me that one again in the future.

If you could have any car, what would it be?

Batman’s Tumbler. Really. I’m not kidding. I want that one!

However, I’m not sure if the Tumbler, for all its cool gadgetry, has room in the back to store dog crates, so I better opt for a good SUV instead. I recently saw an ad for the 2011 Dodge Durango. I’d like to try one of those … black of course.

Tell us about your writing:

How long have your been writing? Was it a dream, a goal or is it just a hobby?

I’ve been an avid reader for as long as I can remember and enjoyed writing stories during school English lessons and homework assignments. I was just 12-years-old when I realized that being a writer was all I wanted to be in life. During my teens, I rewrote some of the stories from my English lessons in my spare time and learned by expanding the narrative, dialogue and introducing new characters. It all grew from there.

How many hours a day do you devote to writing? Do you have a set routine or do you write when the mood strikes?

I try to write as much as possible. Whenever I’m out looking for books to buy and sell, or paying bills and grocery shopping, I keep a notepad and pen in my pocket so I can scribble ideas as they come to me. I also keep paper and pen by my bed in case inspiration should strike in the dead of night … which it often does.

Is there some place special you like to be when you write?
I prefer to be alone, behind a closed door. I also keep my back to the window because any activity outside distracts me. Even a bird flying by will annoy me if I’m caught up in the zone of my work.

Do you listen to music or do you need a quiet place to write?
It depends on my mood. When I was writing God’s Soldiers, the final book in my Dark Retribution Quartet, I listened to the album Fallen, released by Evanescence in 2003, almost constantly. The song lyrics don’t relate to the story or characters, but the tone and atmosphere of the gothic rock music helped put me in the mind-set. It became the soundtrack to that particular story.

Backlash is a new book I’m currently working on. Before I settle to work on that project, I listen to the song Behind Blue Eyes, by Limp Bizkit. The video to the song was made to promote the movie Gothika, also released in 2003. Halle Berry appears in the video, reprising her role from the movie, with band frontman Fred Durst. It’s a great song and video that also matches the theme of the story very well.

Tell us about your book:

What is the name of it and is it part of a series or a stand alone novel?
My first book is Wrath and Remembrance. It’s the first story in a quartet. The other three in the series are: Comparing Scars, Hitting Back and God’s Soldiers.

Where did the idea come from?
I have always loved thrillers, especially those about vigilantes, where an ordinary individual’s life has been transformed by a situation out of his normal range of control, and he is compelled to take action because he feels isolated. I have seen many similar stories in the news. I first got the idea for it when I was looking at the side of a hill that lead up to the edge of a stone quarry. Suddenly, I imagined a man running down the hill at night and my mind just went into overdrive. I was asking myself questions like: What would he be doing there at that time of night? … Would he be running to or away from something? … What would be the circumstances? Is he frightened or enraged?

At that moment, Jack Parrish came to life in my imagination.

How long did it take to write?
The Quartet was originally all one volume, but it was too much for just one book. I was still getting ideas for the characters and new plot threads were developing, so I spent a long time splitting the story into sections, which eventually developed into a quartet of books. From start to completion, the entire process took about a decade. It sounds like a long time, but I was involved with a lot of other things, including research for my other book projects.

What is it about?
Wrath and Remembrance and the sequels are dark revenge-thrillers with a supernatural twist. The central character, Jack Parrish, opens and closes the quartet, as he takes readers on a journey through his turbulent life and violent world. He’s an ordinary man who’s far from perfect, but is looking forward to some peace in his life when suddenly he’s pulled into a game of cat and mouse and the people he loves are murdered. It’s very much a story of the human condition; how changing times and circumstances can shape who we are.

Your other work:

Do you have any upcoming projects in the works or other books that have been published?
I have two other books already published:

Hank Shank VIII is my contemporary retelling of the life of Henry Tudor. It’s classed as historical fiction because I was inspired by the life and times of King Henry VIII. Ideas for the book came when I learned more about him and I imagined how his life would have been if he had been born in the 20th Century, but with the same situations, problems and relationships to deal with.

Blood and Water is a fast-moving thriller about a man pushed to the edge in the aftermath of a brutal robbery. I have enjoyed discussing this project with many friends who have been interested in the premise of my central character, Vincent Birch: ostracized by the small town he lives in, alienated from his wife and forced to battle his way out of a violent situation in the midst of torrential rains that result in a devastating flood.

Backlash is a road-chase-thriller that is presently in the first draft phase. The central character, Darryl Brewer, is searching for his ex-girlfriend who has contacted him by cell phone, pleading for his help to get her out of a bad situation she’s trapped in. As Darryl shoots, stabs, slashes and burns his way through eight states of America: Texas, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Oregon, he hopes to win her back by rescuing her, but the journey gets more violent and surreal as he crosses each state border.

Blue Haze is the working title for a crime-thriller series I am collaborating on with co-author Stacy Eaton.(yep guys that's me - the blog host)  The first part of the story is split into two books and focuses on the problems of addiction in its many forms, both for the addicts and those closest to them. This will be a sharp series of books that will appeal to readers who love fast moving thrillers with a steamy drama and love story running through the core of the stories.

I have another two book projects in the works that are presently untitled. One is a drama-thriller that focuses on the breakdown of a marriage and how it affects those involved.

The other is a book based on the American Civil War.

Where can readers connect with you?

I’m now in the process of getting an author’s page established on Amazon. I have accounts on several sites, particularly Goodreads, Authors.com and the WoMen's Literary CafĂ©.

I have a list of several sites I’m planning on joining. If you see my name and profile, say hello. I love to hear from readers and fellow authors and many are now my friends. It’s also a pleasure to help and encourage other writers who may be starting out with their projects and need advice.

Where can we find out more about you and buy your books?

Samantha Summers Shares about the Guardian without creator Gillian Joy

Character Interview!

 We welcome Samantha today to our blog.
Samantha Summers is the co-stary of "Guardian" written by Gillian Joy.
We hope Gillian wasn't upset that we invited Samantha here today and not her!

Welcome Samantha - Please tell us everything you can about the book you are in:
Hi, my name's Sam and I am a vampire. I was 22 years old when I was kidnapped by some sick sadistic vampire whose name I don't even care to mention, he is nothing more than an unimportant blimp in my life, but he did lead me to find my best friend Hannah.

Hannah is the Venatorcustos, the Guardian of all supernatural creatures and this is actually her story. It's a story I've memorized by heart though, because it's so significant in vampire history. You see Hannah is over 300 years old. She was first born in Amesbury Massachusetts in the year sixteen seventy five, so you do the math if you want to know exactly how old she is. She was a bit of a tom boy back then and spent most of her time playing in the woods with her best friend; handsome, blond, blue eyed Gabriel. That was until the day he kissed her, poor thing had no idea what to do, she lost it and ran off and told her mum, who in turn went and had a go at Gabriel's father who also happened to be the town sheriff. That turned out to be the catalyst that set in motion a series of ruinous events that ended up haunting Hannah for centuries.

If you want the full story read the book! But long story short Gabe's dad wasn't happy about his feelings for Hannah so he tried to have Hannah and her mum executed for witchcraft. Well he didn't quite succeed — obviously or Hannah wouldn't have made it to be over 300 years old — and as a positive it did lead her to meet Bernard, the warlock her mother had once had an affair with, and he became her mentor and confidant in future years. But as a result, the final outcome was that she did spend the next few hundred years on a bit of a vendetta and lost almost everyone close to her, while she hunted for the true creature she believed was behind the execution.

That was until she met Jesse. Jesse is a vampire, dark and handsome and nothing but trouble, and unfortunately for Hannah she couldn't help but fall in love with him, which just caused her grief all over again. Why would falling in love with Jesse cause her grief? Because for one Hannah was brought up to believe that the guardian is not allowed to love the supernatural creatures she is meant to protect. And for two, Jesse was created by Gabriel. Well you can imagine Hannah’s surprise when she learnt that not only was her childhood sweetheart alive — well a vampire anyway — but he was married? Damn hey! Well Hannah had a bit of a meltdown in life about then and decided to just pack it all in and start again. So with Bernard’s help she was reborn.

Unfortunately for Hannah being reborn doesn't mean she can forget who she is and it didn't take long before she was knee deep in crudelitas again. (Crudelitas being the ancient name for the supernatural) And that's about where I came into the picture.

Hannah and I were friends for quite a while before she decided it was time to take control of the Custas again. The Custas were a supernatural council and they were supposed to help Hannah keep the crudelitas under control, but while she had been off playing Buffy the vampire slayer and trying to reinvent her life over, they had pretty much gone off the rails and were running thing on their own terms instead of those set by the Venatorcustas.

Then when she discovered that the vampire Custas were harboring the actual vampire responsible for her mother’s death she was determined things would change. So with the help of some old friends — and while she was still trying to get a handle on her conflicting feelings for Jesse and Gabriel — she decided to get all the Custas together for a meeting and tighten the reigns, and no it's not as easy as it sounds, and no things didn't go as smoothly as planned, but hey it all worked out in the end right and that's the main thing, even if she did learn a bit more along the way than even she bargained for. :)

Wow Samantha that sounded so good, I didn't want to interrupt you while you were talking.  When I'm done here, I'll be visiting Amazon to purchase this, sounds great!

First we all want to be different, so what is the one thing you wish your creator had done differently with you?
Tough one, I actually really like who I am, strong independent, loyal and caring. I just wish they'd let me get more involved in a hands on sense. I'd love to get right into the action instead of always being left on the sidelines to babysit. I know it's necessary, but hey, I am still a vampire and I really need some action sometimes.

If you could have added something to the story, and your creator would have let you, what would that have been?
Oooh a hot an juicy sex scene with Jesse, I mean have you met the guy? He's hot, I mean really hot, he is sex personified and in a real bad boy kinda way, and if I could've just....... But alas, Gillian is obviously just too wussy for that, but would even just a kiss have hurt?

Don't get me wrong, I mean I know Hannah's in love with Gabriel and I know he's more sensible and mature and sweet and still hot as hell, but Jesse will always be my bad boy. I hope!

What do you love best about yourself? What do you like least?
I'm a strong independent kick arse kinda girl, be nice if I could show it a bit occasionally though. It's not even as  if there are any flashbacks to my younger wilder days to show how kick arse I really am. Wait! That's because I've never had a chance to be really kick arse. Well you wait. They can't hold me back forever.
What part of the book was the hardest for you and your creator to work through?
Well I can't speak for Gillian, but the hardest for me is watching Hannah fumbling over herself trying to deny her feelings for Gabe. Well not really deny, but avoid. I think she admitted her feelings long ago, but watching her trying not to act on them, especially when he so openly feels the same way, is just excruciating. I don't think Gillian had too many dramas putting the whole story down though. She never seemed to stumble too much, it really just flowed from one stage to the next.
Is there a sequel for this book? If so, what do you want to accomplish in the next book.  If not, do you wish you could continue your story?
Oh yeah! It's already written and should be released in March 2012. I'd like to say that I finally get to kick some arse, but they're making me wait till book three for that. It's coming though I promise. I can't say too much about Forever, which is book two I don't want to give it all away , but it's nice to see Hannah finally get some answers. Let's just hope she has enough sense to act on them. She worries me sometimes that girl, she just needs to relax.
Stacy can I just add a huge thank you for letting me  be a part of this. It's so nice not having to sit in the background for a change. I love being front and center.

Samantha where can we buy the book that your in?

How can we reach out to your creator, Gillian Joy?

Ty from Nebulous talks & leaves his creator, Keith Weaver at home!

Character Interview

We are excited to have had the chance to sit down and talk with Ty without his creator Keith Weaver around.  Hope you stick around to see what Ty has to say behind his back!  shhhh... don't talk to loud - we don't want him to know he was here!

My name is Ty, and if you believe in the unbelievable then I have a story for you.  I am 10, and just your average normal son of a single Mother and older brother to Xavier.   Well, one late night something took Xavier from our room and into a mysterious light.  I followed him, without fear, knowing I had to save his life.

What happened next you will not believe.  I ended up in a magical world called Nebulous.  It was here that I went on an epic quest to save my brother from the evil shape-shifting Queen Joro.  Her magic and power had a hold of Nebulous, and she lived in a castle in the middle of a giant lake.

I don’t want to bore you with a lot of detail; you’ll have to read my story for that.  But on my quest I discovered many wondrous creatures, magical spirits and dangerous obstacles.  If you can imagine a world where there are monsters, both good and bad, down to pesky little spirits that will play a trick or two on you.  It was my love for my brother that kept me going, and some amazing friends that I made along the way.

My best friend was Bake, a shape shifting cat who was stripped of his ability to change by the Queen, so he roamed Nebulous as a Halfling, part cat and part man.  But what a cunning and courageous person.  He helped me from start to finish, and had some other magical abilities as well that the Queen didn’t know about.  Without his help, I would have surely fallen prey to many things in Nebulous.  The beauty of the world was overmatched by its dark, evil characters.

Thank you Ty!!  That sounds like you had quite an adventure!!  Answer a few questions for us!

We all want to be different, so what is the one thing you wish your creator had done differently with you?
I wish I had been older when I went to Nebulous.  As brave as I may have seemed, I was just a boy and scared the whole time.  My will to save my little brother and the help of my friends kept me going, but there wasn’t a time when I didn’t want to turn around and go home.  I understand, though, that fate doesn’t wait for perfect circumstances.

It also would have been nice to have some kind of power in Nebulous.  There were so many mystical beings and creatures, something other than the power of the human spirit would have been okay with me!

If you could have added something to the story, and your creator would have let you, what would that have been?
I would have loved for this to take place in the future, when everyone has a robot servant or friend, at least I hope.  It would have been so cool and helpful to have my own robot friend on the mission.  I envy the boy from Lost In Space, he always felt safe with his robot companion.

What do you love best about yourself? What do you like least?
I love that the bond I have with my brother was stronger than any evil or magic in the world.  I ended up in an unbeatable situation that no matter how hard it got, I continued forward and at times forgot I was just a boy in a strange world.    This is also what I like least about me, though.  I should have been stronger, at least to me I feel I should have been.  An outsider might view me as heroic, but I was always so scared that I feel bad about it, to constantly let my own fears creep in despite what my little brother was going through.

What part of the book was the hardest for you and your creator to work through?
Describing the beauty of Nebulous.  Despite the evil things in the world, and the Queen, it was a miraculous world of beauty and magic.  The land was so pure and vibrant, and it was almost always sunny out, there were just a couple of minutes of nighttime a day!  The lake the castle was in, wow, what a spectacle.  It had the kind of clear water where you could see anything in it from far off, it was so serene.  I hope we did it justice in depicting that beauty.

Is there a sequel for this book? If so, what do you want to accomplish in the next book.  If not, do you wish you could continue your story?
Yes, I don’t want to give too much away, but there is a planned return to Nebulous.  This time I want to take my brother and enjoy the world with him.  I don’t want it to be such a tense, dangerous journey again.  Plus, having him with me will be such a change.  I also want to re-connect with all my friends from there, I miss them so much.  You have to read my story, they are all amazing with such odd and magical traits.  You will fall in love with them just as I did!

Before you Leave Ty - Tell us where we can buy it!

Jack Parrish - Dark and Deadly visits us today!

Character Interview!

We welcome Jack Parrish today to our blog.  Jack is the star of the Dark Retribution Quartet written by John Walker. We hope John wasn't upset that we invited Jack here today instead of him!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My name is Jack Parrish. If that sounds familiar to you, it’s because you’ll have heard about me on the TV news.
I’m wanted by the police for a string of murders. One I did commit – granted! – but the others I was set up for. The man I shot deserved to die. It doesn’t matter whether you believe me on this or not, but for what he did to those I loved, he needed to be killed.
You could say I’m one of life’s survivors. That’s how I view myself.
When my parents died as the result of a senseless car accident, on my ninth birthday, my life changed forever. I was in the back seat of the car when it happened and I never did find out exactly what caused the wreck. I was left without parents, a scar shaped like a horseshoe beneath my right cheekbone and suffering from amnesia for the following eighteen years.
As a young boy I was sent to live with Godparents. My godmother cared for me as if I had been her real son; but her alcoholic husband hated me from the start. Growing up around him was not fun.
In my teen years, I found an outlet for my anger and frustration at the local boxing club. Looking back, the club was like a gladiator academy, but it was through that sport that I made two great friends: Tony Morrow and Jake Callan. I grew up with Tony and we stuck by each other through many scrapes. It hit me hard the day I discovered his dead body.  The police blamed me for Tony’s murder, too.
Death has prowled around me my entire life, sparing me, but taking everyone I’ve ever grown to care for: my parents, my twin daughters, my best friend, the woman I later fell in love with and intended to marry …
It’s one of the reasons I’m a loner now. I’m not totally alone; Jake Callan is the one man I still feel I can trust, but there’s no one else.
I could tell you where I live, but I won’t because the two cops I escaped from, the night they arrested me, have since made tracking me down a personal quest – especially after I left them both lying unconscious by the side of the road. I know they’ll never stop searching for me, but I also know that unless they are guided through a natural maze – they’ll never find me. I’ve become an expert at hiding in plain sight.
It’s enough to tell you that I have a safe place and a new identity that I acquired from a man I rescued from a mugging. He was severely beaten and in a bad way when I found him. I managed to drive him back to his isolated home, where he died soon after from head injuries. His tragic end became my way out: I took his identity and his home became my haven.
Now I have a German shepherd dog for company. I’ve become a misanthropist and a vigilante. The bitterness and anger that still burns inside me, I vent when I take my dog out with me onto the dark city streets as I hunt for criminals. Any that I find, I hit so hard they end up in hospital, beaten to within an inch of their miserable lives, and crippled so they never pose a threat to anyone again.
Right now, I’m in a period of calm … before the storm. I’ve been informed that everything that I was forced to endure in my life before this – was meant to be – to make me stronger, so that I can handle the worst of what is still to come. So now, during this interim, I prepare myself, both physically and mentally, for what I have been assured will be my own personal war.
It’s coming soon.
Something bad is coming my way.
Judge me as you will … but I know that I’m justified for the man I killed … and for those I still will.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dude - you are one series and dark guy! Talk about gritty!!!  I have a few questions for you before I let you get back to your killing spree.

We all want to be different, so what is the one thing you wish your creator had done differently with you?
Would a peaceful life have been too much to ask for? These days, especially after everything that has happened, I try to be philosophical, but it’s a daily struggle. I’m torn by wishing that I had just been one of the multitudes of men who have passed through history quietly and without incident, while at the same time I have had to come to terms with the knowledge that it was all part of a larger plan. How I feel always relates back to those I have lost along the way. I was only nine-years-old when I lost my parents. From what I remember of them, they were both good people. If things had turned out different, I could have seen my daughters grow up and been there to help them achieve their individual goals and dreams, but that wasn’t meant to be. I know my marriage would have ended sooner or later, given the circumstances and the way Sarah was, but when I later became involved with Miriam Walsh – I knew she was special. I wished I could have had a life with her, but again that wasn’t meant to be. Tony Morrow was a great friend and I wish he could have found some peace in life.
I eventually found love again with Felicia Keller and I know I’ve been blessed to find another special person. I wish for a quiet, content life for us to share, but I don’t know what the future has in store and I know better than to tempt fate.
If you could have added something to the story, and your creator would have let you, what would that have been?
I would have some of Jake Callan’s quality for patience and logic. Rather than bulldozing my way through situations, I wish I could have planned things out better, in such a way that Miriam and Tony would have been safe. Frank Newham, the man I killed, wouldn’t have got to them first. My moves were second-guessed and it cost the lives of my friends. That’s also been hard to come to terms with.
Also, even though I pulled the trigger on Frank Newham, I still think he got off light for what he’d done. Remembering back to the night I executed him, I should have made him suffer first … I should have made him beg for their forgiveness.
What do you love best about yourself? What do you like least?
My strength is my greatest attribute, both in mind and body. Once I make up my mind that I’m going to do something, I always see it through no matter how long or hard the journey I have to take. The resolve I have has kept me from crumbling the way many weaker individuals would have done, and it’s enabled me to make a positive difference in previous years. In book 4 of the Quartet, you’ll find out exactly what I’m talking about. A lot of good men fell by the way-side in that situation. But if I wasn’t there, the outcome would have been a whole lot worse.
What do I like least about myself? That’s easy. I don’t like how strangers are nervous when I’m in their presence. It’s been useful sometimes, I have to admit. My life has been so turbulent that the violence has tainted me somehow. I’ve had to fight fire with fire. Jake and Felicia have both told me that I’m like a force of nature and I’m too intense for many people to handle. I know it’s true. Jake and I are polar-opposites in that respect. Jake is also a strong man. I sparred with him back in our boxing days and I know he can handle himself. But the difference between me and Jake is that he can pause long enough to calculate the options. He’s smart that way. I’m too emotive and I just react in the heat of the moment – often by brute force. I’m aware that others can sense it about me. Strangers sense the violence in me, along with the deep-rooted anger. When I look them in the eye they shudder. It’s as if they look at me and they can tell that my life hasn’t been good, that I’ve done bad things, and I have enemies who want me dead. Many will no doubt applaud what I’ve done … but they still wouldn’t want to be me.
What part of the book was the hardest for you and your creator to work through?
Losing those I cared about in such a terrible way. There isn’t a day goes by that I don’t think about them. I know I’ll see them again one day. I just have to endure whatever life still has in store for me first.
Now I know there are 4 books in this series, but do you think your creator will ever allow you to come back out? Has he talked to you about that at all? If he did - what would you want to see in that next book?
We talk often, but it’s a case of whatever will be – will be. If history has taught me anything, it’s that I’m targeted indirectly; the attacks come via those I’m closest to and care most about. If anything happens to them, or another bad situation occurs, then I’ll step up and do what I do best. If I have to die to keep them safe – so be it!
What I would like to see is closure, so that I would be able to live without having to look back over my shoulder the whole time. But I know that’s never going to be possible. Like I’ve already said: I have enemies who won’t stop until I’m dead and one in particular … the one who instigates it all … he’ll be hunting me right till the end. Believe me when I tell you this … you better pray you never meet him.
